NHL Be a Pro - Can't Score?

I got the game last night and I haven't scored once with my guy and I've played many games. He is a LW sniper. I have never played hockey in real life so I don't know where he is supposed to be positioned to score and such. When I get the puck I usually get by the defender and shoot a slap shot, that always gets blocked. I also try to go in front of the net and shoot one timers, but I still never score. I even do the free shoot against the goalie and have only scored twice. I also only like like 8 talent points after each game.
